The Moderational Effect of Maturation of Characters in the Relationship among Harm Avoidance, Experiential Avoidance, and Worry

|
The excessive efforts to avoid anxious feelings result in paradoxical effects. Therefore, clinical issues are not the experiences of anxiety per se but the efforts to avoid them. In this context, Yoo(2010) previously tested a mediation model in which experiential avoidance plays a mediating role in the relationship between generalized anxiety symptoms and harm avoidance that is the temperamental vulnerability to anxious feelings. In present study, the authors investigated the question whether or not the maturation of characters(Cloninger, 2004) would have therapeutic effects on the relationship among harm avoidance, experiential avoidance, and worry. In order to answer the question, two hierarchical regression analyses were conducted respectively in path 1(harm avoidance → experiential avoidance) and path 2(harm avoidance → worry) of the previous mediation model. The results of analyses showed that the maturation of characters had moderating effects on both path 1 and path 2. These findings suggest that the manifestation of temperamental vulnerability could be therapeutically moderated by the maturation of characters. In additional correlation analyses, the maturation of characters was positively correlated with positive control modes, and was negatively correlated with negative control modes. Based on the results, the maturation of characters could be conceptualized as an equivalent to so called optimal control and the authors discussed the implications of present study in theoretical and clinical manner. Finally, the limitations of this study were discussed along with suggestions for further research.
